The nature reserves, singapore's only substantial natural habitat containing much of singapore's original biological diversity, covers an area of 2100 ha of forested area, which is approximately 3% of singapore's total land area.
Ecosystem services
Recycling of carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. Protecting our water suoolies and fragile soil from pollution through ground porification, nutrient cycling, decomposing and water cycling.
Biological resources
Preservation of genetic diversity of plant and animal species from extinction. They are valuable in augmenting the narrow genetic base of established food crops. New potential uses are being discovered from plants and animals for food, fibre energy , industrial resources and medicines. Animals help in nutrient cycling, pollination of folwers and dispersal of seeds.
Social benefits
The reserves provide a unique and fascinating place for recreation, an outdoor classroom for study and research on our ecosystems. Through play and education, individuals lean to appreciated and care for the natural world.
